Goodbye, Till Tomorrow

Jacek is a young man acting in a student theatre in Gdańsk. One day he meets Marguerite in the street: a French girl, in the city for a short time. Jacek falls in love with her. She is interested but what she wants is not clear; one day she is close and the next she is distant. Neither of them can quite say what the thing between them is. Janusz Morgenstern's film did something unusual for Polish cinema at the time: no politics, no war, no great subject. Only a summer, a city and two young people. Zbigniew Cybulski co-wrote the screenplay and plays the lead; it is one of the works he is most remembered for after Ashes and Diamonds. The streets of Gdańsk are the film's second character. The ending is not a coming together but something even lighter than a farewell.
