Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee

The antivirus software bearing John McAfee's name made him a great deal of money. Then he left all of it: he took up teaching yoga, built a compound in the jungle in Belize, lived with armed guards, and said he was producing antibiotics from plants. In 2012 his neighbour Gregory Faull was found dead at home. Belizean police wanted to question McAfee; he fled the country and was never charged. Nanette Burstein's documentary works that period on the ground. She goes to Belize and talks to people who worked at the compound, to neighbours, and to former associates. The picture that emerges does not match the story McAfee tells about himself. What makes the film interesting is McAfee's relationship with the camera. He talks constantly, produces version after version, and rather than making the documentary maker's job easier he keeps making it harder. Who it's for: Anyone interested in crime documentary, personality-driven portraits, and the extreme figures of the tech world. Who it's not for: The telling sits close to sensationalism and some claims remain unproven. The violence and drug content is also heavy.
