What Growing Up Wild Is About
This Disneynature documentary follows five animal young from different corners of the world. Each is dealing with the first difficulties of its life: working out where and how to find food, learning to recognise danger, leaving the family and standing on its own. The telling runs the five stories alongside one another. Directed by Keith Scholey, the film sets the familiar beautiful imagery of the nature documentary into the shape of a coming-of-age story. At seventy-seven minutes and with its warm narration it is plainly designed for family viewing. The images are striking, though the way such films load human feeling onto animals is a debated approach in nature documentary. The visual language of the Disneynature films made for the big screen is kept here as well. Daveed Diggs narrates.
