Hammarskjöld: Fight for Peace

Per Fly's 2023 Swedish film covers the final weeks of United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld. In 1961, having sent UN troops into their first wartime operation during the Congo crisis, Hammarskjöld boards a plane to negotiate a ceasefire, and that plane goes down near Ndola. Mikael Persbrandt plays him as a man caught between international responsibility and a private life he keeps hidden; the film's handling of his sexuality is measured but explicit. The cause of the crash has been disputed for more than sixty years and official inquiries have not settled it. The film takes a clear position, which means it dramatises a hypothesis; it is worth holding in mind while watching that this is an interpretation rather than an established fact. It premiered at the 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam. Who it's for: viewers interested in Cold War diplomacy, the Congo crisis, and the institutional history of the UN. Who it's not for: those who want a narrative that preserves uncertainty around a disputed death, or who dislike the deliberate pace of political biography.
