What Waltz for Monica Is About
Monica Zetterlund works a telephone exchange in a small Swedish town. She sings, takes stages in night clubs, and raises a child on her own. Then jazz carries her to Stockholm and from there to New York. She records with Bill Evans, makes albums, becomes famous. But the success comes with a hard price: at home she is not taken seriously for a long time, and her family life is crushed underneath it. Per Fly directs, with Edda Magnason as Monica, singing the songs herself. Zetterlund represented Sweden at Eurovision in 1963 and finished last without a single point; that defeat is part of the story too.
