What Hanezu Is About
Takumi, who works in wood, settles in the village of Asuka in Nara, repairs old houses and keeps a quiet arrangement with the land around him. He meets Kayoko, who went to the same school; she is caught up in the colour crimson, dyes scarves in the shade of hanezu, and lives with Tetsuya, an editor at a magazine. The bond between the three of them shifts slowly. Hanezu is an old word from the eighth-century anthology Man’yōshū for a red that fades as you look at it. Naomi Kawase made the film from a novel by Masako Bando and showed it in competition at Cannes in 2011, letting the excavations at Asuka into the story as well.
