What True Mothers Is About
After years of treatment, Satoko and her husband adopt a baby and live quietly for six years. Then a young woman comes to the door and says she is the child's mother. Calling her a threatening stranger, as the summary does, is the opposite of what the film does: Naomi Kawase gives the entire second half to that woman and tells the story of a girl who became pregnant at fourteen and had to give up her baby. So the subject is not which of the two mothers is the real one but that both of them are. Adapted from Mizuki Tsujimura's novel.
