Hatari!

In Tanganyika a group of men make their living catching live animals for zoos: rhinoceros, zebra, giraffe, monkeys. An Italian woman photographer joins them, the work continues, and the relationships inside the camp shift. Howard Hawks built it almost without incident; there is work instead of plot, and the capture sequences were genuinely filmed, so the passages of vehicles chasing animals are not faked. John Wayne leads. Its most famous element became Henry Mancini's melody for the walk of the baby elephants, which took on a life of its own. It runs long and the pace is deliberately loose. Who it is for: viewers who like Hawks's films about groups of men and real location work with animals. Who it is not for: anyone troubled by scenes of animals being captured.
