What Heart of a Dog Is About
In the Moscow that follows the October Revolution, Professor Preobrazhensky wants to put his science at the service of the new order and undertakes a bold experiment: he transplants the organs of a clerk who died hours earlier into a meek stray dog he found in the street. The man who results chooses a new name for himself and, together with his revolutionary friends, turns the professor’s comfortable bourgeois life upside down. What the experiment shows is that it would have been better for everyone if the dog had stayed a dog. Adapted from the short novel Mikhail Bulgakov wrote in 1928, the film uses science fiction to needle the new society. Max von Sydow and Mario Adorf appear in Alberto Lattuada’s hundred and thirteen minute Italian and German production, completed in 1976.
