What Higuita: The Way of the Scorpion Is About

Luis Ara’s 2023 documentary is about the Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita. Through the eighties and nineties Higuita came out of his area, took penalties, played the ball with his feet and became known for the scorpion kick; his manner changed what a goalkeeper was assumed to be. The film takes in what came after the pitch as well: his friendship with Pablo Escobar and what that cost him. Ara neither clears him nor condemns him, but sets Higuita’s own account beside the accounts of the people around him. The goalkeeper Jorge Campos and Carlos Valderrama are among those speaking. It was made for Netflix. It went out in November 2023 and runs a hundred minutes.
