What Holy Matrimony Is About
A painter who has spent years abroad comes back to England. When his valet dies on the way, a confusion follows: the man buried as the painter is the valet, and since he is now taken for dead the painter starts living under his servant’s name. He builds a quiet life with that name and even marries. But once unsigned paintings of his begin to appear the lie comes apart, and the matter ends up in court. The film is a comedy of identity and at the same time a story about how far an artist’s name can be separated from the work. Monty Woolley and Gracie Fields appear in John M. Stahl’s eighty seven minute American film, completed in 1943.
