What Magnificent Obsession Is About
The life of Robert Merrick, a spoiled rich man, is saved by the hospital’s only resuscitator, but because the machine cannot be in two places at once, Doctor Hudson dies at the same moment: a selfless surgeon and philanthropist. Trying to carry the weight of that death, Merrick comes into the life of Hudson’s widow Helen while concealing who he is. When an accident costs Helen her sight, the relationship and finally her life are put at risk. John M. Stahl’s Universal production was adapted from Lloyd C. Douglas’s 1929 novel and opened on 30 December 1935. Irene Dunne plays Helen and Robert Taylor plays Merrick. Douglas Sirk filmed the same novel again in 1954 with Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. There is an inconsistency in the record: the Turkish title field gives one name while the Turkish summary states a different one.
