What Honky Tonk Is About
Candy Johnson is a fast-talking grifter who works his way from town to town until he settles in Yellow Creek and turns himself into its corrupt boss. The one person trying to put things right is his wife’s alcoholic father. Jack Conway directed for MGM, and the film, released on 2 October 1941, was the first to pair Clark Gable with Lana Turner. It took close to four million dollars and became the studio’s biggest earner of the year, after which MGM began designing vehicles specifically for the two of them, and it settled Turner’s standing as a leading lady. Frank Morgan, Claire Trevor and Marjorie Main fill out the cast.
