Saratoga

A horse breeder’s granddaughter falls for a gambler at Saratoga Springs, and the friction between them moves back and forth between the track and the bookmaker’s ledger. Directed by Jack Conway, it was the sixth and last film Clark Gable and Jean Harlow made together. Harlow doubled over in pain on set on 29 May 1937 and went home; nine days later she was dead of kidney failure at twenty-six. MGM chose to finish the picture, shooting the remaining scenes with Mary Dees from behind and dubbing the voice with Paula Winslowe, and released it less than two months after her death. It became the highest-grossing film of 1937 and the biggest earner of her career. Lionel Barrymore, Frank Morgan, Walter Pidgeon and Una Merkel fill out the cast.
