What House on Haunted Hill Is About
A rich man invites five strangers to a haunted house for his wife's birthday: whoever stays until morning gets ten thousand dollars. The film offers a rigged game more than a haunting; every sound in the house serves somebody's purpose, and what holds you is not the ghosts but who is deceiving whom. William Castle rigged cinemas with a plastic skeleton flown over the audience on a wire, and much of the film's fame comes from that. Vincent Price leads. Before watching: it is not frightening by current measure and the effects are plainly simple. It goes down better as a look at the showmanship of nineteen-fifties cinemagoing.
