Lúcia Murat's 1989 Brazilian film rests on interviews with women arrested and tortured under military rule. Eight women speak to camera. The film does not give this as plain documentary. A fictional character enters between the interviews; she speaks alone and takes on what the testimony cannot say. Murat was arrested in the same period. The narrative is not about revenge but about what comes after survival. The tone is mocking in places. Who it's for: viewers of Brazilian history and cinema of testimony. Who it's not for: viewers for whom accounts of torture would be difficult; the interviews are direct and detailed.
