What How the War Started on My Island Is About
Early 1991: the Yugoslav army does not recognise Croatian independence and is still holding barracks inside the country. Gajski travels to an island to get his son out of national service. The islanders have laid siege to the barracks and organised a festival of songs and recitations to talk the major and his soldiers into surrendering, but the major has wired the place with explosives and intends to blow up the island. Vinko Bresan turns the start of a war into comedy and canonises nobody. For years it was the most watched Croatian film at home.
