Marshal Tito's Spirit

Stipan, a policeman, comes to a small Croatian island in the Adriatic to investigate strange occurrences that have frightened the whole population. At first nobody will talk to him, and then it comes out: the island is said to be haunted by the ghost of Josip Broz Tito. For Luka, the mayor, this is a chance to turn the place into a Tito themed amusement park; the old partisan veterans of the Second World War do not believe in ghosts at all, and for them the apparition is Tito himself, come back to lead a new revolution that will restore communism. Vinko Brešan’s ninety seven minute Croatian film won the Big Golden Arena for best film at Pula along with awards for screenplay, actor and music, and it was the most watched domestic release of its year.
