What I Always Wanted to Be a Gangster Is About
Four separate stories set in the same roadside cafe: an incompetent man attempting a robbery, two girls running away from home, a pair trying a kidnapping, and old gangsters talking about their youth. All of them want to belong to the criminal world and none of them is suited to it. Samuel Benchetrit shot it in black and white and kept the pace deliberately slow, which is where the comedy comes from, because nobody is in a hurry. Anyone fond of Jarmusch's diner scenes will recognise the territory. The segment with Jean Rochefort is the best of them.
