I Am Martin Parr

Lee Shulman's 2024 documentary is about the photographer Martin Parr. Since the seventies Parr has photographed British everyday life close up and in saturated colour. The subject is how that way of looking has been received. His work has at times been accused of mocking its subjects; the narrative does not hide the objection and gives Parr's own answer. Parr is watched at work, and his wife Susie and colleagues such as Bruce Gilden speak. The photographs take wide space in the film. Who it's for: viewers of photographic history and documentary photography. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical reckoning; the documentary stands close to its subject.
