What I Are You, You Am Me Is About
In a small seaside town in Japan, Kazuo and Kazumi, both in their last year of junior high, take a tumble at a temple and through a supernatural intervention their minds and bodies are exchanged. What follows is the effort of each to carry on the other’s life under the pressures of school. The film gives this not merely as a ridiculous situation but as a testing of the relation adolescence has with its own body. The account builds the town and the school in detail; as the comedy grows, a sadness gathers underneath. It has no interest in explaining how the exchange came about. Satomi Kobayashi and Toshinori Omi appear in Nobuhiko Obayashi’s hundred and thirteen minute Japanese film, completed in 1982.
