What I Don't Belong Anywhere: The Cinema of Chantal Akerman Is About
The documentary gathers what the Belgian director Chantal Akerman says about her own work, across more than forty films. The places she filmed on the way from Brussels to Tel Aviv and from Paris to New York are visited in turn; Akerman describes belonging nowhere as both a lack and the source of her work. With her editor Claire Atherton she explains why the shots are held so long and how time becomes a material in a film. The account is not a summary of a career but the tracing of a way of thinking. Gus Van Sant also speaks in Marianne Lambert’s sixty seven minute Belgian production; it was completed in 2015, a year before Akerman’s death.
