I Love You Again

This 1940 comedy is one of the many films William Powell and Myrna Loy made together, but the setup is unusual. Larry Wilson is a dull, penny-pinching, rule-bound small-town businessman; an accident restores his memory and he recalls that he is in fact a con man who lost his identity years earlier. He decides to go back to the life he left, and then sees the wife who is about to divorce him and falls for her for the first time. So the man has to impersonate his own life: to win her he must keep playing the tedious man he despises. Powell switching between two people and Loy slowly sensing something is off carry the comedy. Who it's for: viewers who love classic Hollywood comedy and the Powell and Loy pairing. Who it's not for: anyone who will find the amnesia device too convenient; the film has no interest in realism.
