What White Shadows in the South Seas Is About
On an island in the South Pacific, a doctor who has surrendered to drink is sickened by the white traders working the islanders half to death for pearls, and speaking up about it lands him in trouble. A storm leaves him washed up on an untouched island, where the life he finds shows him just how rotten the arrangement he came from really is. Adapted from Frederick O'Brien's book, the film was a turning point for MGM as the studio's first release carrying a synchronized soundtrack. Clyde De Vinna's location photography in the Pacific won the cinematography award at the second Academy Awards. Robert Flaherty started the production but left after falling out with W. S. Van Dyke, and Van Dyke stands as the only credited director.
