I Miss You

Jorge has lost his son Gabriel and travels from Bolivia to New York. He means to confront Sebastian, his son's boyfriend; he only learned after the death that his son had been with a man. Sebastian pours his grief somewhere else: he starts writing a play in memory of the man he loved. While the two men blame each other, the Gabriel each of them thought he knew slowly turns out to have been someone else. Rodrigo Bellott adapted the film from his own play, which was a considerable success in Bolivia and had itself come out of a loss of his own. Gabriel died by suicide, and the film argues directly about the silence around that, and about how a family and a country look at homosexuality. Scenes from the play cut into the film's present. Oscar Martínez plays the father, and the film was Bolivia's Oscar submission that year.
