What I, the Executioner Is About

Police detectives look for the link between a run of killings and a sixteen-year-old boy who died by suicide. The link is this: before his death the boy was sexually assaulted by five women, and the killer treats what he does as the settling of that account. This has to be said; the framing that casts the murderer as a kind of dispenser of justice is the film’s own, and it is built as a justification rather than as a question. Tai Katō directed and wrote the screenplay with Haruhiko Mimura and Yoji Yamada from a story by Tadashi Hiromi. Keiji Maruyama shot it and Hajime Kaburagi wrote the score. The Shochiku production opened on 13 April 1968 and stands squarely against the studio’s usual manner, an experimental piece somewhere between film noir and giallo.
