What I'll See You in My Dreams Is About
The songwriter Gus Kahn first struggles to make his name, then has to fight again to survive the years of the Depression. The film does not show success as a destination; it tells how easily what has been won slips away. The account sets the songs inside the story and uses the popular music of the period as it was. His wife’s part in keeping the work going stands plainly in the text. It is one of the productions of American cinema of 1951 to tell a musician’s life. The going back and forth between home and stage sets the account’s rhythm. Doris Day and Danny Thomas appear in Michael Curtiz’s hundred and ten minute American film, completed in 1951.
