In the Line of Duty 4

Yuen Woo-ping made this 1989 police thriller at a hinge point in his own career, setting aside the wires and classical styles of his earlier work for a contemporary fight language that is blunt, fast and heavy with impact. Cynthia Khan plays Inspector Yeung and Donnie Yen plays Detective Donny, sent to Seattle to help unravel a drug trafficking operation whose only weak point is a witness who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The film's reputation rests on two sequences rather than on its plot. One is a fight staged on the roof of a moving ambulance. The other is a dirt bike chase that tears across the city. In both, the crew looks less like it is choreographing than managing risk, because a great many of the blows visibly land. Donnie Yen's international profile effectively begins with the speed of his kicks here. The script is flat and the characters are thin. The film never pretends otherwise. It was built as a showcase for physical action, and it does that job well enough to sit among the best Hong Kong ever produced. Who it is for: viewers who want stunts where the fall is real and the camera does not cheat. Who it is not for: anyone expecting character depth or a coherent procedural.
