What Snake in the Eagle's Shadow Is About
A young man who cleans a martial arts school and is beaten constantly is secretly taught a fighting style by an old beggar he happens to meet. Someone is hunting that style. The film joins fighting to comedy in a register apart from the serious kung fu films of the period; the narrative keeps the training sections deliberately long. The style Jackie Chan would carry into his later work becomes clear here. It is Yuen Woo-ping's first film as director, with Jackie Chan in the lead and Simon Yuen as the master. Who it's for: those who like classic kung fu and physical comedy. Who it's not for: viewers looking for depth of story; the weight is on the fight design.
