Lesia Samaieva What Infernal Guidon, or Cossack Christmas Is About
The tale begins with a bargain struck between hell and heaven: if the Devil can catch the best Cossack warrior and hold him until Christmas night, he will be able to wipe all the Cossacks off the map. Saint Peter accepts the wager. While the Devil comes down to earth and lays his traps, the Cossacks have to settle both their own scores and the demons that appear before them. The account draws on Ukrainian folk tales and puts humour ahead of harshness. It was made for children and tries to tell Cossack stories to a present-day audience. Mykhailo Kostrov’s hundred and two minute Ukrainian film was adapted from a tale by Sashko Lirnyk; it was completed in 2020.
