Initial D Legend 1: Awakening

Fujiwara Takumi works in his father's tofu shop and drives the delivery down Mount Akina in the dark every morning. He has done it for years and has no interest in racing. But what that road taught him is the thing the best drivers in the area have not learned: the descent. Masamitsu Hidaka directs. This is the first of a three film new Initial D series. The aim is to tell the story again from the beginning. Shuichi Shigeno's manga was adapted as anime in 1998 and that series became the standard for a generation. This trilogy remakes the same opening: the character design changed, the voice cast was entirely replaced, and the music moved away from the eurobeat identity of the old show. All three changes drew a reaction from the earlier audience. The technical premise is intact. Takumi's car is an AE86, an ordinary, old Toyota. What makes him superior is not power but knowing weight transfer and grip in his body. The whole appeal of the series comes from that idea. The races here were produced with computer assistance, and the loss of hand drawn texture became a criticism of its own. Who it is for: viewers who like car culture, mountain pass racing and serialised anime adaptation. Who it is not for: anyone who knows the old series will watch this in permanent comparison, and the film does not finish on its own. It runs straight into the next part.
