What Invisible Life Is About
In Rio in the 1950s two sisters are separated by their father's decision. Each writes for years believing the other is far away and doing well. The film shows the audience from the start that both are in the same city, and the tension comes precisely from that. The narrative uses the shape of melodrama deliberately and puts the feeling to work criticising the father's authority. Karim Ainouz directed, with Fernanda Montenegro in support. It won the top prize of the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. A real warning: there is sexual violence, forced marriage and a detailed birth scene. The ending is very sad.
