Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition

Directed by Malcolm Venville, this documentary traces Iron Maiden's fifty year arc from East London pubs to the world's largest stadiums, made with unprecedented access to the band's official archives. Its most notable formal choice is this: the band members never appear on camera, contributing only voiceover, while the film is built around extensive interviews with fans from all over the world and every kind of background. Archive footage is accompanied by new animated sequences featuring the band's mascot Eddie. Guest contributors include Lars Ulrich of Metallica, the actor Javier Bardem, Tom Morello and Chuck D of Public Enemy. It premiered in London in May 2026 for a limited theatrical run and grossed roughly three million dollars worldwide, with no US theatrical release. Critics were generally warm, with Empire calling it a high energy documentary that tidily spans fifty years, though Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian found it a corporately policed fan promo, and several reviewers flagged the omission of any mention of original vocalist Paul Di'Anno's death in 2024. Who it's for: Iron Maiden listeners and fans of archive driven music documentary. Who it's not for: Not for viewers wanting critical distance and hard questions, since the film presents a narrative the band itself signed off on.
