What It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World Is About
Bill, a television reporter in Hong Kong, barely gets by supporting his wife and three daughters. The flat is small, the debts do not end, the dreams are large. All sorts of odd trouble comes the family's way. Then his wife hits the lottery and their lives change at a stroke. Directed by Clifton Ko, the film was a much loved family comedy in the Hong Kong of the eighties. The pairing of Lydia Shum and Bill Tung carries it. The humour is not cheap; what is really at stake is how people treat one another when money suddenly arrives, and how neighbourliness and class shift with it. Made as a Lunar New Year picture, it is warm and quick. It plays now almost like a document of the Hong Kong middle class of its moment.
