What It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World II Is About
Having lost their lottery money when the bank went under, the Biu family’s luck turns again: the father’s promotion and the daughters’ schooling and careers add up to the whole family moving to Canada, where a fresh run of disasters is waiting. Clifton Ko’s comedy was playing directly to something current. Emigration was what Hong Kong was actually talking about in the late eighties, and Vancouver was the destination of the moment, so the film draws its humour from a family being comprehensively out of place in a foreign country. Bill Tung and Lydia Shum are the pair who carry it.
