What Mr. Coconut Is About
A man who has lived by growing coconuts in Hainan comes after many years to stay with his relatives in Hong Kong. Life in the city is like nothing he knows: people gambling on the stock market and on property, heavy telephones carried by hand, crowds and speed. His relatives too treat him as a burden and are embarrassed by him; but after a while the man’s plainness makes everyone in the house look at their own life. Clifton Ko’s hundred minute Hong Kong comedy tells the bustle of the city at the end of the eighties through a countryman’s eyes. Michael Hui takes the lead, with Raymond Wong and Ricky Hui in the cast. It was completed in 1989.
