Iverson

Iverson is director Zatella Beatty's feature debut; Beatty and her team followed basketball player Allen Iverson for seven years, from 2007 to the film's premiere. The film had its world premiere at Tribeca on April 27, 2014, and aired on Showtime on May 16, 2015. The documentary traces Iverson's story from a poor childhood in Hampton, Virginia, to eleven NBA All-Star selections, largely narrated in his own words, covering his devotion to hip-hop culture and his defiance of the NBA's conservative conventions. The film holds a 60 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Who it's for: anyone curious about an NBA star documentary a director spent seven years filming, told largely in the athlete's own words. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a detached, critical sports documentary, since the film takes a fairly sympathetic approach to its subject.
