What J.R.R. Tolkien: Designer of Worlds Is About
The documentary looks for the starting point of a man who lived a quiet and unassuming life and left behind an enormous, partly unfinished body of work. Simon Backès follows Tolkien’s written and visual sources, his fascination with language and his medieval reading to ask how that world was built and why it found so much answer in a twentieth century usually described as disenchanted. The medievalist Leo Carruthers speaks in the film, which draws on interviews Christopher Tolkien had given earlier and on footage from a BBC interview with Tolkien from 1968. ARTE France carried the fifty four minute French production; Michael Lonsdale and Jérôme Kircher narrate and the music is by Peter von Poehl.
