Jago: A Life Underwater

Rohani is a Bajau fisherman of eighty. He has spent his life in the coral waters of Southeast Asia, diving without equipment to hunt fish. The documentary listens to what he tells: how he learned to dive, what he met with in the sea, the turning points of his life. The one telling the story and the one it is about are both Rohani. James Reed's forty-eight minute film shows the past not through archive but through reconstruction: Rohani's youth is played by people from his own village, most of them relatives and friends. It was shot in the Togian Islands. The film won the grand award at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and found wide distribution around the world.
