What Janela da Alma Is About
Nineteen people sit in front of the camera and talk about seeing. They range from mild short-sightedness to complete blindness; one describes when he first started wearing glasses, another how he builds a world he has never seen. Among them are José Saramago, Wim Wenders, the blind Franco-Slovenian photographer Evgen Bavčar and the neurologist Oliver Sacks. The talk moves from how they see themselves to how they see others, and from there to what seeing means in a world saturated with images. João Jardim and Walter Carvalho set strange images between the interviews, burning trees and empty deserts. The seventy-three-minute film is deep in places and unexpectedly funny in others.
