What Pro Dia Nascer Feliz Is About
João Jardim draws a line from Pernambuco to São Paulo, from state schools to private ones, and listens to what teenagers say about the institution that is supposed to be forming them. On one side are the ordinary troubles of being fifteen anywhere; on the other are Brazil’s inequality and the mark left by violence becoming routine. The film’s strength is that it interprets very little and makes room for people to speak. It takes its title from the 1983 Cazuza and Frejat song that became an anthem of the dictatorship’s final years, won eleven awards, and drew close to a hundred and forty thousand people to cinemas.
