What Jungle Emperor Leo Is About
Osamu Tezuka's Jungle Taitei has been animated many times over, and this 1997 feature takes the later half of the manga, with Leo grown and a father himself, rather than the cub most audiences remember. Yoshio Takeuchi directed it for Tezuka Productions, with a score by Isao Tomita. One correction to the record is worth making: Tezuka did not make this film. He died in 1989, eight years before it opened. Where the story finally goes is heavier than the cartoon framing suggests, resting the idea that all life is equal on Leo's own sacrifice.
