What Kaiser: The Greatest Footballer Never to Play Football Is About
Carlos Henrique Raposo, the man everyone called Kaiser, moved from club to club as a professional footballer for twenty-six years and never once appeared in a match. The method was simple: he signed on the strength of praise written by journalist friends, put off taking the pitch by claiming injury, and moved to the next club before the contract ran out. Louis Myles’s documentary is about Brazilian nightlife in the eighties, a period in which footballers stood at the centre of that life and fame could operate independently of anything done on the field. The film does not present Kaiser as a lone con man; it shows a whole circle that wanted to believe him and made the thing possible. Bebeto, Renato Gaúcho and Zico appear on camera. It had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018.
