Ram's 2007 Tamil film follows the collapse of Prabhakar, who has a postgraduate degree in Tamil literature and can find no work. He lives in a system that counts his knowledge as worthless; his anger turns first inward, then outward, and the story spirals into violence. The question is sharp: that an education in language and literature has no value in the market, and where that can take a person. Ram offers this not as an explanation but as a consequence. Jiiva's performance is counted the hardest of his career. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is what has lasted. The violence is harsh and the story suffocating. Who it's for: viewers interested in Tamil independent cinema and films carrying social criticism. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding violent content and suicide, or wanting a hopeful close.
