Peranbu

Amudhavan drove for a living abroad for years. When his wife leaves he is alone with Paapa, his daughter, who has cerebral palsy. Realising they cannot live in the city, he moves to the hills and starts learning her care from nothing: food, washing, sleep, and understanding what someone who cannot speak wants. As Paapa grows something new appears; she is becoming aware of her own sexuality, and her father is not prepared for it at all. Ram's film treats disability neither as pity nor as heroism. The narrative is divided into chapters, each opening with a name given to a state of nature, and how far the father's patience holds changes from chapter to chapter. The film does not make him faultless; it includes the moments he runs. Mammootty plays Amudhavan and Sadhana plays Paapa. A trans character played by Anjali Ameer appears at one of the narrative's turning points. Who it's for: Viewers who like Tamil cinema, family drama, and honest narratives about disability. Who it's not for: It runs long and some chapters are didactic. The subject is also unremittingly heavy, with almost no moment of relief.
