What Kings Go Forth Is About
On the French Riviera in the last year of the war, Lieutenant Sam Loggins and Corporal Britt Harris of the US Army both fall for the same woman, Monique. What the record’s summary never says is the whole point of the film: Monique was born in America and came to France with her mother to get away from the hostility directed at her parents’ interracial marriage; her father was a Black American. Once the two soldiers learn this, the film stops being a love triangle and becomes each man’s reckoning with his own prejudice, one of them hesitating while the other treats it as a curiosity. Delmer Daves directed, from a screenplay by Merle Miller out of Joe David Brown’s novel. Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood lead. One thing must be noted: Monique, whose father was Black, is played by a white actress, a contradiction sitting inside a film about racial prejudice.
