Kisaragi

A young Japanese idol called Kisaragi Miki died a year ago; the official account is suicide. On the anniversary of her death, five men who met on an internet fan forum gather in a room for a memorial. All five know one another only by their usernames. As the talk goes on it becomes clear that each of them had a much closer connection to the girl than anyone would have thought. The whole film takes place in one room, among five people. Directed by Yuichi Satoh, it was made on a small budget and became an unexpected success in Japan by word of mouth. The construction is close to theatre: each new piece of information ruins the last one, and the explanation of suicide comes apart step by step. Shun Oguri is in the cast. The story does not mock fan culture; it takes these people's obsession seriously and gets both the comedy and the sadness out of that.
