What La mujer del puerto Is About
Perla, the star of a wretched cabaret by the docks who earns her living by selling her body, falls in love with a sailor without knowing that he is her brother. Perla’s mother Tomasa tries at any cost to prevent it and fails. The film tells the events from three separate points of view; the same days mean something different each time. The account neither asks for pity nor gives a lesson; it leaves the setting as it is and saves nobody. The tragedy is born out of not knowing, and the responsibility is not laid on any single person. Evangelina Sosa and Patricia Reyes Spindola appear in Arturo Ripstein’s hundred and ten minute Mexican film, completed in 1996.
