What Life Sentence Is About

Javier Lira has built a new life after prison: he works at an insurance company, he is married, nobody knows his past. Then a policeman who knew him before sees him in the street. The man remembers the years when Lira was "Tarzan", the women, the Islas Marías. And he wants money in order to forget what he remembers. Paying once is not enough. Arturo Ripstein directed the film from a novel by Luis Spota, writing the screenplay with Vicente Leñero. Pedro Armendáriz Jr. takes the lead. The subject is not crime but a debt that never closes: the man has served his sentence and the system will not accept it. It took four Ariel awards in Mexico, including best film and best director.
