What The Black Widow Is About
In a small Mexican town a woman works as a housekeeper in the priest's house. The town keeps an eye on her, talks about her, wonders what she is up to. The relationship between the woman and the priest does not match what the town thinks it knows. Everyone has a secret, and all the secrets gather around this woman. Arturo Ripstein directed the film from a stage play. The material that recurs across Ripstein's filmography is here too: the provinces, religion, suppressed desire and the pressure of neighbours. Isela Vega takes the lead. The telling builds the woman as neither victim nor culprit; it leaves open the gap between how the town sees her and what is actually happening.
